This exhibition explores our most popular water sport, beginning with Native Hawaiian history and knowledge of he’e nalu, and the evolution of surf culture in the islands today. New work from an accomplished group of artists of the islands includes Carol Bennett, Pete Cabrinha, Peter Shepard Cole, Mark Cunningham, Wayne Levin, Charlie Lyon, and Noble Richardson.

“THE ESSENCE”
Thursday January 10, 7:00 pm, Castle Theater
Filmed by the father of the surf film genre, Bud Browne, with archival footage showcasing more than 50 of surfing’s greatest legends, among the likes of George Downing, Buzzy Trent, Gerry Lopez, and Duke Kahanamoku. Followed by a talk story with Anna Trent Moore and professional surfing athletes Kai Lenny, Paige Alms, and others.

Well-known educator of Hawaiian language and culture,
Pulama Collier, will share her knowledge about traditional surfing stories.
Selling Hawai’i with Surfing, 1880-1980
See how Hawaiian surfing appeared in a century’s worth of advertising and other parts of pop culture, through rare and historic illustrations, described and explained by author and historian DeSoto Brown.
Lectures are FREE events, but space is limited.
