Maui Wine Dinners-The Westin KOR Villas “A Toast to Tuscany”

The Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas’ “Under the Tuscan Sun” wine and food pairing dinner was an amazing experience. Frances Mayes and her husband, Edward Kleinschmidt Mayes, were there in person to meet and greet the attendees. What a thrill to be introduced to the woman that penned such a wonderful novel! Not only has she written the famous book she has also written cook books and additional novels. The event was a great success and everyone had a fabulous time tasting each dish paired with Tuscan Sun Wines. Wines that have been handpicked by Frances herself.

The evening started with a fresh catch with fregola, fennel and poricini cream which was absolutely divine! This was paired with Pensiero, a wonderful crisp pinot grigio.

Next, the venison Bolognese with fusilli pasta, fresh ricotta and micro basil was paired with Auguri, a Sangiovese blend.

The third course was the pork belly with kabocha squash risotto, sage and pomegranate and paired with Tondo Tondo, 100 percent Sangiovese. The dessert was a hazelnut chocolate torte with orange zabaione and mint gelee. Before each course, Mayes explained the story behind the wine that was selected for that pairing. The dinner was prepared by the restaurant’s Chef de Cuisine Alvin Savella and the resort’s Executive Sous Chef Matt Skaletsky and restaurant and wine list manager, Jim Hansen paired the menu with Ms. Hayes’ wines.
