About The Artist
Zebewa originally started as the childhood dream of two sisters who wanted to travel the world. They made their dream come true and began collecting small carved pieces from around the globe which they drilled and combined to make beautiful, one of a kind amulets infused with stories and symbolism from every corner of the earth.
Over the last few years jeweler and a long-time collector of Zebewa, Rona Smith, began working with the sisters and in January of this year became the new owner. The sisters still continue to travel and supply Rona with precious carved pieces, including sought after Netsuke.
Netsuke are miniature sculptures that were invented in 17th century Japan. They began as carved wooden or ivory ornamental toggles worn at the end of the cords to hold a kimono closed or to fasten a purse or a pouch. Netsuke evolved over time from being strictly utilitarian into objects of great artistic merit and an expression of extraordinary craftsmanship. Today, the art lives on, and some modern works can command high prices around the world. Less expensive, yet beautiful pieces are available in museums as well as part of the Zebewa collection right here in Hawaii at Maui Hands galleries.
