Masters of the Currents Saturday, March 3, 2018; McCoy Studio Theater; 7:30 pm
Many of Hawai‘i’s most recent residents come from Micronesia. Whether brought to the Islands for economic opportunity, environmental necessity, or to be with family, little is known of the rich traditions and cultures they bring with them. Masters of the Currents is a theatrical performance that takes the audience on a journey into the reality of life as a young Micronesian immigrant in Hawaii. This transformative production serves as a creative bridge between new and old immigrant communities and tackles the heartbreaking reality of the bullying that exists within our Aloha state. Calling upon the shared histories of Hawai‘i’s refugees, Masters of the Currents was created through first-hand interviews and community participation. “What can we learn from these descendants of the early Pacific Ocean navigators and how can we extend aloha to the newest people arriving here in Hawaii?” Created by Leilani Chan & Ova Saopeng. “Masters of the Currents” is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation Fund Project co-commissioned by Maui Arts & Cultural Center in partnership with TeAda Productions, BravaTheater Center, Pangea World Theater, and NPN. For more information: www.npnweb.org. This project was made possible with funding by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Theater Project, with lead funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Additional support provided by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, Network of Ensemble Theaters’ Travel & Exchange Network (NET/TEN), Hawai’i People’s Fund, and Kim Coco Fund for Justice of the Iwamoto Family Foundation. Mai Poina: The Annexation Debate Saturday, March 10, 2018; McCoy Studio Theater; 7:30 pm
In 1898, Hawai‘i was annexed by the United States in a most unorthodox and deeply controversial manner. Citizens of both nations debated the issue, then, as well as today. This stage production is a reenactment of the enlivening debate, as ripped from the pages of Hawai‘i’s recent past and brings to life the arguments that raged during 1898 in regard to the annexation. The performance aims to make Hawai‘i’s history relevant to a diverse audience that extends beyond Native Hawaiians, illustrating the impact these events had on everyone living in the Islands, both at the time and since. A discussion with Hawaiian scholars follows the performance. Presented by Hawai‘i Pono‘ī Coalition, an apolitical and nonpartisan consortium founded to educate residents and visitors about Hawaiian people and their culture, and Hawai’i’s true history. Tickets: $28/adults (plus applicable fees); 10% discount for MACC Members and ½ price kids under 12

Jake Shimabukuro Saturday, March 17, 2018; Castle Theater; 7:30 pm
Renowned for his super-fast and complex finger work, ‘ukulele wizard Jake Shimabukuro has redefined the meaning of music that comes from that instrument. There is no doubt that Jake Shimabukuro embodies the heart and soul of ‘ukulele music, as no one else can wring the emotion, beauty, meaning and thrills out of four strings like he can! Starting his career in Hawai’i, Jake took his inspiration from some of the islands’ great ‘uke players, but he quickly expanded his scope from there, drawing influences from across the musical spectrum. In 2001, he was signed to Epic Records as a solo artist. It was the start of what would become a deep catalog of solo albums, noted for their dazzling fretwork, ambitious repertoire, and wistful melodicism. In 2005, Shimabukuro became an international phenomenon when a video of him performing the George Harrison song, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” went viral on YouTube. By adapting a guitar hero’s anthem for the ukulele, Jake made a significant statement: the ukulele, with its humble four strings and modest two-octave range, is an instrument limited only by the imagination and creativity of the person playing it. Jake is now a worldwide phenomenon: he’s been declared a musical “hero” by Rolling Stone, has collaborated with and won accolades from diverse stars in the music world, and wowed audiences on world tours and TV. Ho‘onanea preshow festivities start at 5:30 pm, with local craft vendors and live music in the Yokouchi Pavilion Courtyard. Tickets: $45, $55, $65, $85 (plus applicable fees)

Now, having presented an entirely new and exciting vision of human movement on five continents and to over twenty million people in live and televised audiences, the company bears witness to a world that is more fluid, changeable, and culturally interconnected than ever before.
