MAUI HANDS GALLERY AT 1169 MAKAWAO AVE. PRESENTS PASTELIST AND ENCAUSTIC ARTIST, KATHLEEN O’BRYAN. KATHLEEN WILL BE WITH US IN THE GALLERY EVERY THURSDAY IN APRIL FROM 12-3PM DISPLAYING A COLLECTION OF HER PIECES AND TALKING ABOUT HER PROCESS.
About the Artist
Makawao pastelist and encaustic artist Kathleen O’Bryan has made her living as professional fine artist for more than 35 years, participating in solo, group and juried exhibitions in world-class cultural art markets in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Maui, Hawai‘i.
As a fine art colorist, Kathleen discovered that with undiluted, dry pigment soft pastello, she could create saturated hues that brought emotional expressions to expansive skies and infinite landscapes. She found that painting on black paper rather than white as her ground eliminates all light and wave competition, which allows the pastel medium to achieve the radiant brilliance found in nature.
Encaustic is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in” (enkaustikos). Heat is used throughout the process, from melting the beeswax and varnish to fusing the layers of wax. The medium can be used alone for its transparency or used pigmented. The medium is melted and applied with a brush or any tool the artist wishes to create from. Each layer is then reheated to fuse it to the previous layer.
