Surfing Goat Dairy Has A New Owner!
Returning to his childhood roots on an Alberta farm, Canadian Jay Garnett had a vision to grow and modernize Surfing Goat Dairy. On the slopes of Maui’s Haleakala Crater, the 42 acre Goat farm is perched on a ridge overlooking both coastlines. Nestled in what is known as “Upcountry”, easily accessible just minutes from the beach, the farm offers something for everyone. Since its founding in 2002, the farm has established itself for its award winning goat cheese, available on site, online, and found on the menu of many of Hawaii’s best restaurants. However, the design and operations were ready for a fresh evolution and Garnett’s vision has put into motion an ambitious plan to evolve the business into one of Maui’s leading agri-tourism destinations.
Just a few months after the devastating 2023 wildfires of Lahaina and Kula, Garnett took over the reins, confident in his belief in his long-term vision, in the renewal of Maui, and ready to execute on his ambitious 3 year plan. The first phase was to construct the enclosures and area for curated interactive and educational experiences, this area launched Dec 16th, when Surfing Goat Dairy hosted “Goat Fair” to reintroduce the farm to visitors and the local community. The new energy and vision has reinvigorated the business with Surfing Goat seeing the busiest day in its 20 year history. The new hands-on experiences have drawn much attention on social media with visitors sharing that the visit was the highlight of their trip. There are also hourly casual farm tours to meet the mama goats, the big buck Hemingway, or witness the milking and cheese making. There is also the once daily chore tour where guests can try their hand at milking. Many visitors come to simply sit outside and enjoy one the farm’s cheese tasting platters or delight in fresh chocolate truffles made with fresh goat cheese incorporated with local ingredients.
The growth in 2024 will see a new Café (summer 24’ – serving fresh baking, light meals, and desserts), more interactive experiences around cheese and chocolate making, local artist fairs, goat yoga classes, and even long-table dinner collaborations with local chefs.
